As of 2023, Canada’s organic food and beverage industry is valued at $7.12 billion placing Canada as the 5th largest organic market in the world. The organic sector is growing, and with that comes a commitment to consumer transparency and education, from seed to shelf.
Organic production is a holistic system designed to optimize the productivity and health of diverse communities within the agro-ecosystem, including soil organisms, plants, livestock and people. The principal goal of organic production is to develop operations that are sustainable and harmonious with the environment and good for our health.
Organic growing and processing follows strict standards, ensuring that shelved organic products are crafted with care and attention. Organic processing involves regenerative practices benefiting people and the planet. Organic standards cover the preparation, handling, packaging, labelling, and transportation of products, including rules on ingredients, processing aids, cleaning, pest control substances, and segregation from non-organic items. Organic foods do not contain artificial preservatives, flavourings, colourings, and irradiation.
When you see the Canada Organic logo, you can rest assured the product has been held to a standard of care through the entire process of its production. 2024 marks a significant milestone for the Canada Organic Regime (COR) as Canada celebrates 15 years since the organic claim became enforced in Canada by the federal government. The Canada Organic logo has earned its reputation as a trusted symbol of organic integrity and was officially required 15 years ago on June 30, 2009.
